How Self Doubt Serves Us

How Self Doubt Serves Us

So I just got off Life Labs (the weekly group coaching calls we offer as part of Your Success Code) and today's theme was around self doubt. More precisely, the importance of it. And here are some key takeaways from the call, which I thought were so important I wanted to share them with you.

We all experience self doubt from time to time. It is healthy to do so, first and foremost because it supports our growth and expansion.

Self doubt is a byproduct of confusion. Confusion happens when we’re learning something new, or in other words, integrating a new level of skill and capacity.

Doubt will arise within a specific context. For example, we might feel doubt about a specific skill, such as calibration within coaching or frying onions when cooking.

Sometimes when we experience this doubt we can generalise it to the entire context (i.e I have no skill as a coach) or even to our whole self (i.e. I’m not a competent person).

The further we generalise beyond the specific context, the more this doubt undermines us and our capacity.

There are countless aphorisms that say something along the lines of “It’s darkest before the dawn.”

This is the role of doubt. When we know that, we can get excited about it.

It’s like how we cannot reorganise our closet unless we’re willing to remove the items already in it.

And when we do pull everything out so we can reorganise it, the room gets a bit chaotic for a while.

If someone walks in during that period, they might think, “wow, what a mess!”

Most people see that mess and make it mean something about their self.

They often say something along the lines of “I don’t have my shit together.”

BUT, what would what would it be like if you could… see that (inner) mess and instead think to yourself “My ____ is about to get an upgrade!”

What might your quality of life be like then?

Perhaps you might even come to appreciate the days where doubt knocks at your door. ????
